Ghost on Moto 360 screen

Ghost on Moto 360 screen

One day i look on my Moto 360 display and see something strange. On dark-grey screen of my favourite simple watchface i see an additional elements – weak charging ring and Moto360 inscription. What the hell? Moto display is broken? No, technically is not broken – it is a screen ghost.

I’ve learned a little and find that, this problem is frequently encountered by users of Android Wear watches with LCD screen. Especially Moto 360 like creates the spirits of the charging screen. Image persistence, or image retention, is the LCD display equivalent of screen burn. In this case, for lucky, the effects are usually temporary. My search gived me an idea to write application that may help solve the problem.

Liquid crystals in LCD displays have a natural relaxed state. When a voltage is applied they rearrange themselves to block certain light waves. If left with the same voltage for an extended period of time (e.g. displaying a charging screen in Moto 360), the liquid crystals can develop a tendency to stay in one position. This ever so slight tendency to stay arranged in one position can throw the requested color off by a slight degree, which causes the image to look like the traditional “burn-in” on phosphor based displays – this effect is also called as ghost on the screen. Image persistence can usually be reversed by allowing the liquid crystals to return to their relaxed state. Turning off an LCD display for hours or days will relax the crystals and eliminate the image retention. The usage of a screensaver that has a constantly changing image can help as well. Another approach to removing LCD image persistence is to first create a solid white image and display the image as a screensaver covering the entire display area for an extended period of time.

So i wrote a little application trying to combine second and third method, and may help to remove screen ghosts from watch LCD. I don’t guarantee that your watch ghosts will be removed. However this application may help. For best effect you need to play main animation sequence few times and few times repeat of display a white screen. Application is designed especially for Moto 360 watches but works well on other Android Wear devices – it’s usefull only if you have watch with LCD display just like Moto 360. It’s useless if your watch have OLED, AMOLED or E-ink screen.
