Support for people with mental disorders
“Wsparcie w Gdańsku!” (Support in Gdansk) this is the first application of this type in my country – Poland – not only by name, but also really functioning to support people with mental disorders. In real, on the other side of the screen of Android smartphones on which this program works, there are real people – specialists from a local foundation, who have been working with people experiencing crises and mental difficulties for many years. The opportunity to participate, as the main programmer, in a project aimed at providing real help to people struggling with mental problems was a joy and an interesting adventure.
Designing the application itself from a purely programming side was, of course, no different from programming other applications – I like my job so I always do it with full commitment – but from the substantive side it is a completely different story. It was fascinating to see how very ordinary program on Android, in the hands of experienced psychologists, from a simply helpful and practical tool – performing its functions – can change into a friendly tool – a tool that communicates with the user in a language adapted to the needs of the user group to which it is addressed . Until now, I have used professional help in composing messages or designing visual communication mainly when designing children’s applications, which seems obvious. This time I could look at similar work done during the design of the application intended mainly for an adult recipient. It is surprising how standard alerts or messages that we are all used to in all types of software, can be different when strictly targeted at a specific group of people. However, it turns out that words matter.
