Tizen – what is it
Every technology enthusiast knows the name Tizen. Tizen as a trademark also breaks through to general awareness more and more often. Why i know that? Last months i was answer a lot of questions about developing Tizen apps. So what is Tizen?
Tizen is the name of an open source operating system based on Linux. Tizen grew out of another operating system called Bada, developed by Samsung, which was originally intended to make the company independent of Google’s Android. Android has proved to be unbeatable in phones, however. The problem was the lack of applications for the new Samsung system, so customers preferred Android with gazillion of apps. So the idea fell, but the system itself remained. The system is light, stable and efficient. Samsung therefore decided to use it in its watches and televisions. At the same time, wanting to increase its popularity, it changed its name to Tizen, released the source code so that everyone could use the system at their discretion and established the Tizen Foundation developing new versions of the system.
Tizen-based Samsung watches have gained great popularity due to the moderate price (no licensing fees for Google) and long battery life (advantage of the lightness of the system). Smart TVs equipped with this system, unlike TVs based on Android TV, do not seem to be sluggish in the interface – this also made them popular. As a result, Tizen has become one of the most popular platforms for smart watches and smart TV – gaining popularity, it has gained programmers writing applications, gaining applications is gaining more and more users. And so the circle is closed.
Currently on the smartwatch market, the situation in the popularity of operating systems is as follows: 1. watchOS (Apple Watch), 2. Tizen (Samsung watches), 3. WearOS (Android for watches). The opposite is true for smart TV: 1. Tizen (Samsung TV and several other manufacturers), Android TV (including Sony and LG), manufacturers’ own systems.
Today, Tizen is therefore one of the most popular operating systems on the market – hence its name is more and more commonly used. Currently, when planning the production of applications for smartwatches and the largest possible coverage of the market, it is mandatory to take into account watchOS (Apple Watch) – 40% of the market – and Tizen (Samsung watches) – 25-30% of the market. Watches with WearOS (Android for watches) when you have an limited budget can be simply omitted – they account for only about 5% of the market. There are not many WearOS watches manufacturers outside the Fossil group. In the case of Smart TV, Tizen comes first – 50% of the market, Android TV with 25-30% coverage of the market is the second, and the rest are manufacturers’ own solutions. When planning a TV application, you cannot ignore both systems, but Tizen remains the first choice.
