WatchKit after few months

WatchKit after few months

I’ve spent few months with my Apple Watch and here is what can i say about this device as a programmer. I don’t care about fashion or other lifestyle features of my device, but sometimes i think about its functional side. And it’s makes me nervous. Of course as a developer, not an user…

At the beginning, one of the biggest frustrations was the Apple Watch had to be connected to an iPhone to complete even simple tasks. This meant a lot of the processing power is given over to the more powerful iPhone, helping to keep the Apple Watch small and lightweight while preserving battery, but the third party apps stopped to work if the Watch is too far from the phone. In Watch OS 2 situation is quite better but not ideal. There is still too many restrictions for native running apps on Watch.
The WatchKit software development kit is still missing features that would allow me to include advanced dynamic transitions – you know: all of this funny little animations, which make the apps look good, as well as improve the user experience.

Animations are beamed from the iPhone to the Apple Watch, which means i can’t animate parts of a screen – such as buttons. Instead, the whole screen needs to be animated. I also can’t control how content is scrolled through, or split the screen into two zones. Touch screen of the Apple Watch still only recognising basic gestures such as swipes and long presses…
So, i wait for Watch OS 3 and its WatchKit… Maybe in XCode 8.
